Tactical recognition flashes are basically badges worn on the sleeves as a colour patch to denote what unit, regiment, division, brigade etc a member of the UK Armed Forces is affiliated with. A Royal Marine commando may be commonly found wearing the 3 Commando TRF as associated with 3 Commando Brigade whilst a member of the Rifles Regiment may be found wearing the Rifles TRF along with 3rd Armoured Infantry Brigade on his other sleeve if he part of the Armoured Infantry. Not quite rocket science and obviously used when in the field because helmets will be worn. Basically used in the absence of a cap badge.
